Mangosteen fruit scientifically known as Garcinia mangostana is a tropical evergreen tree, believed to have been originated in Indonesia and is widely available in several South East Asian regions.

The Mangosteen has three major parts: the deep purple rind, called the pericarp; the white edible flesh, segmented (just like oranges) and the black seed. The flesh has a deliciously sweet taste similar to lychee but sweeter; and the seeds in the flesh are extremely bitter in taste and you do not eat these.
Always buy fresh mangosteen that feel heavy and have a bright purple coloured skin and green tops like the image below. Dry and blotched skin indicates old stock. Wash the fruit thoroughly under running water before eating. Ripe mangosteen should be placed in a cool and dry place or stored in the refrigerator.
To open a mangosteen, use a small sharp knife and slice 1/3-inch deep horizontal cut around the middle and twist off one half of the shell, exposing the white, creamy flesh which you can gently remove from the rind and pull apart the juicy segments to eat.
